As I get older and become more involved in the community - work and school - I always try to remain professional ... I do not try to hide that I am a Christian ... I am proud of who I am, but at times I'm afraid to express my Christianity because I am afraid I may cross the boundaries of professionalism.
Two days ago, I went to the Mustard Seed ... The Mustard Seed Street Ministry is a "non-profit, Christian humanitarian organization that responds compassionately to the needs of the inner-city's less fortunate through mobilizing and working with the church and the community". For school, my classmates and I spent 2 evenings at the Mustard Seed - we were blessed with a tour of the facilities and presentations from a former child prostitute, a Calgarian police officer, and five homeless people.
On Thursday night, I listened to a presentation by a homeless gentleman named "Bob" (a fictional name for the purpose of my blog). As I sat and listened to Bob, I was touched as he thanked God for helping him. Once we were allowed to ask questions or give comments - I knew I wanted to say something, but I was afraid of what I wanted to say in front of 35 of my classmates including my professor.
However, I thought, well, this is me and this is a Christian ministry ... so I'm going to say what I want to say, and if people look at me weird or if my professor tells me that it was unprofessional (meaning I should not impart my own beliefs) then so be it ... so in front of all my classmates and my professor, I looked Bob in the eye and I briefly made a comment about his presentation and I ended it with saying "God bless you". I knew it meant something to him b/c of the look in his eyes and when he came up to me he shook my hand and said, "Thank you Kim".
Why is it something as simple, yet so meaningful as saying "God bless you" is so difficult? I am proud that I am a Christian ... yet at times I find holding myself back at expressing myself and spreading God's word b/c I am afraid of crossing the "professional boundaries".
One of the greatest compliments I have ever recieved, and one that I cherish so much is from my atheist friend ... she once said to me, "you are a good christian example" ...
God willingly that I live my life according to God's word and through my life, I can be a good christian example ... God please continue to give me strength and guidance to spread your word and your love ...
